Education
Our USU faculty
are committed to the medical education of future military physicians,
graduate students in the basic sciences, and students in the Graduate
School of Nursing. We participate extensively in graduate medical
education of residents in the National Capital Region, including Walter Reed Army Medical
Center, National Naval Medical
Center Bethesda, and the AFIP.
Research
Our staff are very active in medical research
projects including Distance Learning (Tropical Medicine Central Resource -
TMCR, Digital Mammography, and
Cardiac/Vascular MRI.
Service We also practice medicine and provide clinical
services in Diagnostic Radiology (medical imaging), Nuclear Medicine, and
Radiation Oncology at our affiliated hospitals. In addition, our
medical and health physicists
perform radiologic equipment surveys and Mammography Quality Assurance
(MQSA) testing for the Department of Defense.

Location The USU campus is located in Bethesda,
Maryland - adjacent to the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC - Bethesda
Naval Hospital) that is across the street from the National

The Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences
consists of twelve full-time/billeted faculty
(including 8 diagnostic radiologists, 1 radiation oncologist, 1 MR
research coordinator, and 2 physicists), a registered radiologic
technologist, and three administrative support staff. In addition we have
over 80 clinical and part-time faculty practicing in multiple hospitals
world-wide.
History In 1972, under the sponsorship of
the late Congressman from Louisiana, F. Edward Hebert, Congress
established the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
(USUHS). USUHS provides a comprehensive education in medicine to select
young men and women who are committed to careers as Medical Corps Officers
in the Uniformed Services. In addition, the founding legislation
authorized the University to develop advanced degree programs in the
various health sciences. Our first class graduated in 1980.
