Gross photograph.
There is a very large angiomyolipoma of the upper pole. There are innumerable smaller yellowish masses involving the entire kidney. These are angiomyolipomas (AML's) - a hamartomatous mass composed of:
>vessels
>smooth muscle
>mature adult fat
Solitary AML's are usually seen in women of child bearing age, and are usually sporadic. However, AML in a man, and/or multiple AML suggest Tuberous Sclerosis.
