Modic (and deRoos) Classification of Vertebral Endplate changes seen on MRI:

• Type I (4%): WATER - vascularized fibrous tissue
» decreased signal on T1
» increased signal in T2

• Type II (16%): FAT - local fatty replacement of marrow
» increased signal on T1
» isointense to hyperintense on T2

• Type III: BONE - advanced sclerosis
» decreased signal on T1
» decreased signal on T2
