Title5 Minute Embryology Stages
Text» Fertilization - Union of an egg and the head of a sperm cell
» Cell division
» Blastosphere - a solid sphere of cells (AKA "morula")
» Blastocyst - a cavity forms (the 'blastocele") creating a hollow sphere
• Cells on the outside become the Trophoblast
• Cells on the inside are the Embryoblast
» Trophoblast cells invade the uterine wall, stimulating angiogenesis to develop the placenta
» Blood vessels begin to develop in the embryo
» Primitive Streak - A line of cells forms in the embryonic disc
» Gastrulation - The two layered disc develops an inner - third - layer of cells
» Neurulation - The top layer (ectoderm) thickens in the midline. The Notochord develops between the Embyronic Disc and the Yolk Sac.
• The Neural Plate thickens around a central Neural Groove
• Neural Tube begins to close near the center of the embryo
• Somites form on either side of the closing tube
