Some cancers may infiltrate through the submucosa, and can spread circumferentially around the lumen of the bowel causing a focal area of narrowing. Adenocarcinoma of the colon may spread in this manner, creating an "apple-core" appearance on a barium enema. Lymphoma may also spread by infiltrating through the bowel wall.

NOTE: The other major pattern of cancer growth is a fungating mass that protudes into the lumen and presents as a filling defect or polyp.
