Although it has been long recognized that several sites of breast cancer may develop within the same breast, synchronous contralateral infiltrating breast cancer is an unusual occurrence noted in only 1-2% of individuals presenting with a primary infiltrating breast cancer. Multifocal breast cancer is defined as separate foci of cancer in the same quadrant as the index cancer, where as muliticentric disease refers to a second focus of cancer in a quadrant (usually the same breast) remote from the index cancer. Synchronous contralateral breast cancer is usually not present when mulitfocal cancer is present in one breast.
