Orbital meningiomas are designated as primary if they arise from the meninges of the intraorbital optic nerve and secondary if they extend into the orbit from an origin in the intracranial meninges. They are the second most common optic nerve tumor and are more common in women than men. They often occur or are detected at an earlier age than cranial meningiomas. Although they are benign, they may result in blindness from optic nerve compression.
