Microcephaly means "small head". Similar terms include "micrencephaly" meaning small brain. Microcephaly is defined as a head circumference equal or smaller than three standard deviations (SD) below the mean. Microcephaly can be inherited or sporadic, and it may be the end result of intrauterine disease. In general, microcephaly cannot be reliably diagnosed until the last trimester of pregnancy.
