Clinical history suggestive of abscess and the young age of patient made ultrasound the first imaging technique in this case.

If the sonographic appearance of the mass was more suggestive of a solid lesion such as a carcinoma or lactating fibroadenoma, a mammogram might have been performed to search for microcalcifications. Here, the sonogram is compatible with an abscess as suspected clinically, and aspiration was performed next. Many white cells were seen on gram stain, and Staphylococcus aureus was cultured. Incision and drainage were performed, and the abscess resolved following antibiotic therapy.
