Definition: A well-differentiated, diffusely infiltrating tumor of adults, typically located in the cerebral hemispheres and composed predominantly of cells morphologically resembling oligodendroglia.

Oligodendrogliomas are composed of cells with round homogenous nuclei and abundant clear cytoplasm. Classically, these have been described as "fried eggs." A dense network of capillaries is common. The branching of the capillaries resemble the pattern of chicken wire. Microcystic degeneration and microcalcifications are common.

Immunohistochemistry: There is no immunocytochemical marker which is specific for ligodendroglial tumor cells. These cells are often positive for S-100, Leu-7 and GFAP.
