This series of films demonstrates the typical course of hyaline membrane disease.

The initial study of 12 Nov 84 shows a diffuse homogeneous granular pattern with air?bronchogram bilaterally in a premature newborn. At this time, the patient does not have hypoinflated lungs seen in most patients who present with this disease.

The follow?up examination of 14 Nov shows hypoinflated lungs. The child has been intubated and an orogastric tube is in place. Both tubes are satisfactorily positioned. The air?bronchogram is slightly more prominent, consistent with worsening disease. The study of 19 Nov shows resolution of the pulmonary infiltrates. This patient has a relatively uncomplicated course without development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia or complications secondary to mechanical ventilation.
