Flail Chest describes disarticulation of the rib cage - creating a loose bone and soft-tissue segment that moves paradoxically: moving inward with inspiration and pushing outward with expiration.

NOTE: Normally the chest wall moves outward (expands) during inspiration to increase the volume of the lungs and suck air in. During expiration, the volume of the chest cavity decreases, forcing the air out.
