Dermoid and epidermoid cysts arise from ectodermal tissue displaced internally at the time of neural tube closure. Dermoid cysts are more likely to be encountered in the midline than epidermoid cysts. Dermoid cysts are distinguished from epidermoid cysts by the presence of cutaneous adnexal structures including hair follices and sebaceous glands.
