Ectopic pregnancy describes a gestational sac that is not within the uterus. Common locations outside the uterus include a "tubal pregnancy" (inside the Fallopian tubes) and an "abdominal pregnancy" (in the peritoneal cavity). The major complications of implantation outside the uterus include maternal hemorrhage and fetal death.
Pts may present with abdominal or pelvic pain.
The diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy requires:
1) proof of pregnancy (positive pregnancy test)
2) absence of in intrauterine gestational sac
Typically, an ultrasound is used to identify the gestational sac. (See link below.)
