In evaluating the patient's history (HPI) you want to ask about the PQRST:

P - what Provokes or Palliates the pain or symptom
Q - Quality of pain (dull, ache, burning, stabbing ...)
R - Region (location) of pain or symptom
T - Timing of pain or symptom (at night, w/exercise ...)
