â€¢ most common cause of an intra-orbital mass in persons 10-40 years old.
â€¢ one of the most common causes of unilateral exophthalmos.
â€¢ commonly causes bilateral exophthalmos.
Â» Clinical triad:
â€¢ impaired ocular motility
Â» Two categories:
â€¢ acute: vasculitis with vessel wall necrosis and fibrinoid changes.
â€¢ chronic: inflammatory process with diffuse infiltration by lymphocytes, plasma cells, and macrophages.
â€¢ Wegener's midline granuloma
â€¢ fibrosing mediastinitis
