Image Findings

Flattening of the acetabulum and irregularity of the femoral head.

Differential Diagnosis

Avascular necrosis can be caused by steroids, decompression sickness, marrow packing (e.g. Gaucher disease etc.), as well as Sickle Cell Disease.

Additional Discussion:
The anemia (Hct 27), origin from Africa, and the changes in the hip are all suggestive of Sickle Cell Anemia
