The teeth are embedded in the alveolar ridges of the mandible and maxilla. There is normally a dense white line of cortical type bone, that forms the socket for each tooth - the "lamina dura". Inflammation may be associated with infection and dental pain. The usual treatment is to remove the soft parts of the tooth - the vessels and nerves, by performing a "root canal" procedure.
