Abdominal aotic aneurysm (AAA).
An abnormal enlargement of the aorta in the abdomen (retroperitoneum) generally begins below the origin of the renal arteries and usually ends above the aortic bifurcation into the common iliac arteries. Predisposing conditions include systemic arterial hypertension.

Dilation less than 4 cm usually does not require urgent surgical management. Larger aneurysms (>5.0 cm) may rupture - a life threatening event.

Intravascular endoprostheses are now FDA approved and may introduced through an arteriotomy ("cut-down") rather than through an open abdominal incision.
