There is a round opacity in the right mid lung with a thin crescent of lucency
near the upper border.
PATTERN:
The definition of a mass is fulfilled, with slight cavitation causing the rim
of lucency
DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:
Of the five causes of masses, malignancy and inflammation are the most likely
to cavitate. The smooth inner border of the lucency favors inflammation over
malignancy.
The mass has eroded into a bronchus, but there is little liquified necrosis;
the air from the bronchus thus surrounds the upper portion of the central region
of the mass.
