The entire left hemithorax is opacified. The left main bronchus is cut off at
the hilum with a sharp end to the air column. The lateral view shows complete
loss of the shadow of the left diaphragm, and excessive whiteness over the thoracic
spine.
The left brochial air is abruptly interrupted and the entire lung is filled
with trapped secretions. These are findings of complete airway obstruction.
Complete airway obstruction is caused by the same five causes of visible lung
masses, or by mucous plugs or foreign bodies.
Benign squamous polyp
CORRELATION:
The polyp and its stalk are visible in the gross specimen. The lung is filled
with secretions and the abrupt cutoff of the air column on the radiograph
corresponds to the point where the bronchus in blocked.
